Oktoberfest, the granddad (The Opa?) of beer festivals, has been held in Munich since 1810. Originally in celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, it has been held all but 24 years since (pesky wars in the 19th and 20th centuries kept getting in the way, so just one more reason to keep the peace). Initially a horse race and garden show, Oktoberfest evolved over time to the celebration of Bavarian and German culture we know today.
While we are a long way from Munich, we can still celebrate here in Christchurch with our selection of German and German-style beers.
